Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) to jeden z najsłynniejszych francuskich kompozytorów. Suita na fortepian została skomponowana przez niego w latach 1894 - 1901 i jest jego jedną z najważniejszych kompozycji fortepianowych. Dzieło składa się z trzech jednolitych stylistycznie i fakturalnie części: I - Preludium, II - Sarabandy, III - Toccaty. Wydanie zawiera oznaczenia palcowania, oraz uwagi wykonawcze w języku francuskim. "Pour le Piano", composed at the end of the 19th century, and published by Froment in 1901, is Debussy's first major poano work. The composer, not yet 40 years ols, wad also writing "Pelleas and Melisande" at the time. The three parts of this suite - Prelude, Sarabande, and Toccata - are reminiscent of the classic sonata form. The Prelude opens with four stirring and rhythmic measures, leading into the superb pedal note on "A" which sets the tone and supports the gently resonant theme in an irresistible upward movement. Fauré's Pieces breves come from vintage years but are still suprisingly little heard, for reasons unconnected with their musical quality. Apart from anything else, their reputation has long been hampered by some improbable metronome markings (a problem adressed to present edition). They partial origin as sight-reading pieces makes them slightly easier than many of Fauré's piano works, even most of them call for stretch of an adult hand, and they make an exellent introduction to Fauré's piano music for those not already acquainted with the larger pieces. Faure's composition does not set his Reuiem to the standard liturgical text, instead adding a lyrical Pie Jesu and transcendent Paradisum, and omitting the Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum - which, for most composers, are opportunities to demonstrate the dramatic possibilities available with the choral and orchestral forces. In January, 1981, I performed with Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman, Buffy Sainte - Marie, and Native American actor Will Sampson at the Mikasookie All - Indian Arts Festival in Florida. During one of the concerts, I met and performed with Kevin Locke, a young Lakota traditional singer, hoop dancer and flute player. Kevin taught me the Honor Song for Sitting Bull, sung for over a century to celebrate the spirit of the great Lakota leader.Kevin's name appears in the score, along with that of Margot Thunderbird, a Shinnecock singer, who taught me the four - bar motif that appears in the second variation of the concerto. I mention their names here to honor native American traditions and to thank these two wonderful singers for the gift of their commitment to the traditional music of their peoples.
