Without doubt Faernando Sor is one of the most important composers for guitar in the opening years of the 19th century. He was born in 1778 in Barcelona, and in the famous Benedictine monastery at Montserrat in Catalonia he received a through groundig in singing, organ, guitar and composition. While only 17 he wrote his first opera, Telemaco en la Isla de Calipso, which was successfully performed in Barcelona. Fernando Sor left a legacy of 63 compositions for guitar, including Sonatas, Studies, sets of Variations and Fantasias. The influence of Haydn and Mozart can be clearly seen in his work, and indeed his entire output is dominated by the classical style. This aspect is perfectly demonstrated in his Fantasia in A major op. 4 no. 2, which bears witness to the elegance and mastery of Sor's composition.

Richard Stoker, whose fifth and easiest work for the guitar this is, studied composition with Sir Lennox Berkley and Nadia Boulanger. Since 1962 he has been Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He makes the following comment on his music: "My style makes use of a 'set' of notes used in a partially - ordered way, making use of a pervasive technical feature of much modern music, the ostinato, though each movement has strict tonal functions. This procedure appears in all my work since 1962".

This arrangements in this book are intended to give additional, recreational work to those in the early stages of studying the guitar. Only easy keys are used, there are few accidentals, the rhythms are simple, and the left hand does not move away from the nut position: the harmonic language is traditional and such chords as are used are easy to play - they will be familiar to anyone who has worked through the customary, elementary pieces by Carcassi, Aguado and the like. For the most part, the music is in only two parts - the melody and a supproting bass.
