Z powodu kłopotów finansowych rodziców, musiał opuścić szkołę i znaleźć pracę, aby wspomóc rodzinny budżet. Rozpoczął jako pomocnik hydraulika. Jednak nie popracował w tym charakterze zbyt długo, ponieważ został czeladnikiem w fabryce narzędzi. Następnie był rzeźnikiem. Jego praca polegała na zabijaniu 250 sztuk bydła dziennie i usuwaniu jelit owcom. Żartuje się, iż właśnie ta praca wpłynęła najbardziej na styl granej przez niego muzyki. Urodził się w Montgomery (Alabama, USA) najprawdopodobniej 17 marca 1919, aczkolwiek jako data jego urodzin podawany jest też rok 1915 lub 1917. Zmarł 15 lutego 1965 w Santa Monica (Kalifornia). Ten amerykański czarnoskóry muzyk jazzowy, obdarzony ciepłym głosem o pięknej barwie i głębi, rozpoczął karierę jako pianista, później jednak wsławił się balladami. Dzieciństwo i młodość spędził w Chicago. W 1937 roku zaczął występować w klubach jazzowych w Los_Angeles. W 1939 roku założył Trio King Cole (wraz z Oscarem Moorem i Wesleyem Princem). Z czasem jego związki z jazzem uległy rozluźnieniu, a on przeszedł do historii przede wszystkim jako wokalista śpiewający muzykę "łatwą i przyjemną".
