Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934) to kompozytor brytyjski. Pozostawił po sobie m. in. dwie symfonie, oratorium "The dream of Gerontius", oraz wariacje na temat własny pt. "Enigma". Utwór "Salut d'amour" op. 12 Elgar skomponował w 1886 roku. Artysta przeznaczył tę kompozycję na skrzypce i fortepian. Partię fortepianu pisał z myślą o swojej uczennicy z klasy akompaniamentu fortepianowego - Caroline Alice Roberts. We wrześniu 1888 roku Roberts została żoną kompozytora. "Salute d'amour" istnieje w bardzo wielu wersjach na przeróżne obsady (opracowania m. in. na fortepian solo, na głos wokalny, czy małą orkiestrę). Prezentowane wydanie "Salute d'amour" zawiera aranżację na fortepian solo. In July 1888 Edward Elgar added the date to a piece for violin and piano that he had entitled "Luebesgrüss". Since October 1886 Elgar had received Caroline Alice Roberts as a pupil in the art of piano accompaniment, and the violin piece almost certainly originated in the course of their growing relationship. Master and pupil become engaged in September 1888. One other rather subtle change was also implied by the cover of Schott's printed edtition. The piece appeard in several versions. First in the autumn of 1889, it was released simultaneously in versions for violin and piano, piano solo and small orchestra, then other arrangements followed: by 1899 the cover title to the music boasted no less than 20 instrumental versions and vocal versions in various keys, to two texts in English and one in French. Strauss skomponował poemat symfoniczny "Also sprach Zarathustra" w latach 1895 - 96. Był to dla niego okres pracowity i pełen sukcesów. Artysta cieszył się już uznaniem wybitnego kompozytora. "Also sprach Zarathustra" to dzieło skomponowane w oparciu o traktat filozoficzny o tym samym tytule napisany przez niemieckiego filozofa - Fryderyka Nietzschego. Muzyka Straussa jest komentarzem do dzieła Nietzschego. W kolejnych scenach - żywych dźwiękowych obrazach - odzwierciedla ona idee zawarte w traktacie. Wstęp poematu "Also sprach Zarathustra" - zawarty w prezentowanej publikacji - jest przedstawieniem świtu, wschodu słońca. Fragment ten został wykorzystany przez Stanleya Kubrick'a w filmie "2001: A Space Odyssey", przez co obecnie muzyka Straussa kojarzona jest przede wszystkim z energiczną ewokacją majestatu wszechświata. Niniejsza publikacja - "Also sprach Zarathustra (Opening Theme)" zawiera opracowanie początkowego fragmentu poematu Straussa na fortepian solo. Odnaleźć w niej można dwie wersje o różnym stopniu trudności (wersja właściwa i uproszczona). Strauss composed the orchestrala tone poem "Also sprach Zarathustra" on 1895-96 during a particulary productive and successful period in his life. His reputation as a major composer was growing on the strength of earlier compositions, and he was becoming well known as a conductor throughout Europe. "Also sprach Zaratustra" ("Thus spake Zarathustra") is based on the philosophical work of that name by Nietzsche, whose writing and ideas were then becoming popular in Germany. Strauss's music is a commentary on Nietzsche's work, with various ideas and scenes given vivid musical depiction. The opening section, of which present edition is an arrangement, is a magnificent portrayal of dawn. Since its use in Stanley Kubrick's film "2001: A Space Odyssey" it has taken on a new dimension for a whole generation as a music's most powerful evocation of the majesty of the universe.
