"Madame butterfly" to opera w trzech aktach Giacomo Pucciniego, powstała w 1904 roku. Autorami libretta są Luigi Illica oraz Giuseppe Giacosa. Tekst ten został oparty na powieści Johna Luthera Longa i dramacie Davida Belasco. Premiera pierwszej wersji opery miała miejsce 17 lutego 1904 w La Scali w Mediolanie. Dzieło składało się wówczas z dwu aktów i zostało przyjęte przez publiczność bardzo chłodno. Cztery miesiące później, na przedstawienie w Brescii, Puccini podzielił nieproporcjonalnie długi drugi akt opery na dwie części oraz wprowadził inne drobne zmiany. Tym razem "Madame Butterfly" odniosła olbrzymi sukces. Akcja opery rozgrywa się w 1904 roku w Nagasaki. Okręt amerykańskiej marynarki wojennej zatrzymuje się w japońskim porcie. Młody porucznik - Pinkerton, aby sobie uprzyjemnić życie, korzysta z usług japońskiego pośrednika - Goro, który za opłatą zaznajamia go z młodą gejszą - Cio-Cio-San, nazwaną Butterfly (motyl).
