In the present edition of this Mass, composed by Haydn in 1802 and called "Harmonie Messe" due to its rich use of wind instruments, all choral and instrumental parts are clearly and extensively marked. Haydn's intimantions do not only permit these supplementary markings but make them imerative in order to enable larger choral society of today to giva a vivid and faithful rendition of this exceedingly warm music. When performed by large choirs it is essential to find the right balance between the choir and the orchestra and the woodwinds should be doubled whenever their melodic lines are in danger to be drowned. Louis Karchin (ur. 1951) to kompozytor amerykański. Jest on autorem takich kompozycji, jak m.in. "Rhapsody for Orchestra", "American Visions", "Voyages, czy "Orpheus". Prezentowany utwór "Viola variations" Louisa Karchina to kompozycja w formie wariacji, polegająca na przekształcaniu wybranych motywów muzycznych. Wariacje te utrzymane są w XX-wiecznej harmonice współczesnej. W partii altówki odnaleźć można m. in. liczne tremola, tremolanda, flażolety, grę pizzicato, dwudźwięki oraz tryle. Partie fortepianu i altówki są potraktowane równorzędnie. Louis Karchin is the recipient of the 1985 Walter Hinrichsen Award. This is an annual award sponsored by C. F. Peters Corporation and presented via the auspices of the American Academy and Istitute of Arts and Letters. It consists of the engraving and publication in Edition Peters of a work by a gifted composer who has been selected by the Music Committee of the Academy. Pedal markings are indicated to clarify the notation of the desired effects. Additional use of the sostenuto pedal will be necessary in order to achieve an accurante rendition of the score.
