Without doubt Faernando Sor is one of the most important composers for guitar in the opening years of the 19th century. He was born in 1778 in Barcelona, and in the famous Benedictine monastery at Montserrat in Catalonia he received a through groundig in singing, organ, guitar and composition. While only 17 he wrote his first opera, Telemaco en la Isla de Calipso, which was successfully performed in Barcelona. Fernando Sor left a legacy of 63 compositions for guitar, including Sonatas, Studies, sets of Variations and Fantasias. The influence of Haydn and Mozart can be clearly seen in his work, and indeed his entire output is dominated by the classical style. This aspect is perfectly demonstrated in his Fantasia in A major op. 4 no. 2, which bears witness to the elegance and mastery of Sor's composition.

"Dream of Black Isle" was written for the Edinburgh guitarist Michael Mc Geary and premiered by him in April 1989 at the Inverness Easter Festival; it identifies strongly with a landscape painting by Jake Jackson who lives in the Scottish Highlands near Black Isle. Its first movement was based on the extreme left of the painting where I felt a powerful sense of ancient war and death, and a ghostly processional.
