The Small Print

In July 1888 Edward Elgar added the date to a piece for violin and piano that he had entitled "Luebesgrüss". Since October 1886 Elgar had received Caroline Alice Roberts as a pupil in the art of piano accompaniment, and the violin piece almost certainly originated in the course of their growing relationship. Master and pupil become engaged in September 1888. One other rather subtle change was also implied by the cover of Schott's printed edtition. The piece appeard in several versions. First in the autumn of 1889, it was released simultaneously in versions for violin and piano, piano solo and small orchestra, then other arrangements followed: by 1899 the cover title to the music boasted no less than 20 instrumental versions and vocal versions in various keys, to two texts in English and one in French. As a piano solo, "Salut d'amour" has sufficient technical challenges and musical substance to remain a rewarding experience for the player.

For the convenience of the less experienced payer the theme has been printed on the lower half of page 3 with ornaments written out and ligatures clarified rhythmically. For the student are added: a) the accents in brackets in bar 3, b) in bars 1 - 4 the figures 1 - 6 in italics; they facilitate the reading of the quaver beats. On account of the small note - values, it is advisable when studying to count not only the quavers but even the semiquavers.
