Ross Lee Finney (1906 - 1997) był wybitnym amerykańskim kompozytorem XX wieku. Wielokrotnie nagradzany, m. in. nagroda Pulitzera w 1927 roku za ''First String Quartet''. Zbiór krótkich utworów fortepianowych, zatytułowany ''Youth's Companion'' powstał w 1981 roku, po przełomowym dla kompozytora okresie, kiedy zaczął wdrażać do swoich kompozycji zupełne nowości techniczne. W ''Youth's Companion'' kompozytor ponownie wykorzystuje technikę szeregującą obejmującą symetryczne ''hexachords''. Ciekawostką w tym zbiorze pięciu utworów jest partia głosu solowego w ostatniej pozycji. ''Riddle Song" przypomina piosenkę z delikatnym akompaniamentem fortepianu.
