Erik Satie (1866 - 1925) to kompozytor francuski, prekursor wielu awangardowych kierunków w różnych dziedzinach sztuki. Uważany był za niezwykle ekscentrycznego artystę. Jego prowokacyjne utwory w duchu mrocznej, modernistycznej dekadencji zarówno fascynowały jak i bulwersowały opinię publiczną. Krytycy nazywali Satie "genialnym błaznem". Utwór "Gymnopédies" Erik Satie skomponował na fortepian solo. Są to trzy miniatury inspirowane powieścią "Salammbô" Flaubert'a. Tytuł kompozycji Satie nawiązuje do nazwy corocznego festiwalu odbywającego się w antycznej Sparcie, podczas którego młodzi chłopcy tańczyli oraz prezentowali swoje umiejętności gimnastyczne. Niniejsze wydanie "Gymnopédie" zawiera opracowanie tej kompozycji na skrzypce, flet lub klarnet (osobne dwie partie - pierwsza dla skrzypiec i fletu, druga - dla klarnetu w stroju B) i fortepian. The "Gymnopédies" in their original form for solo piano, were, according to Satie, inspired by Flaubert's novel "Salammbô". The name "Gymnopédie" comes from an annual festival in ancient Sparta at which naked youths performed dances and gymnastic exercises. The lines inscribed by Satie's friend contamine de Latour over a copy of the first "Gymnopédie" read: "Slicing obliquely through the shadows, a raging torrent rushed in waves of gold over the polished flagstone, where atoms of amber, glistening in the the firelight, joined their saraband to the naked dance".
