Andante sostenuto

Nokturn - bardzo spokojna i zrównoważona oraz równie nastrojowa instrumentalna forma muzyczna inspirowana poetyckim nastrojem ciemnej nocy. Jej początki pojawiły się w epoce klasycyzmu, utożsamiana jest jednak z muzyką romantyczną. Ostateczny kształt nokturnom nadał im ich pierwszy romantyczny kompozytor John Field szeregiem nokturnów na fortepian, a spopularyzował ten bardzo rzadko uprawiany przez kompozytorów gatunek muzyczny Fryderyk Chopin. Jedynie te dwie osoby uważa się za "czystych" nokturnowych kompozytorów, aczkolwiek incydentalnie próby kompozytorskie podejmowali również następni twórcy. Pewien renesans nokturnów nastąpił dopiero we współczesnej muzyce poważnej. Nokturn jest miniaturą bez określonego kształtu, w charakterze sentymentalną, powolną i nostalgiczną, aczkolwiek Chopin zwykł w środkowych częściach swych nokturnów wprowadzać dynamiczne fragmenty.

Nokturny Chopina charakteryzują się wysokim kunsztem. Osiemnaście utworów tego gatunku kompozytor wydał w ośmiu opusach, w latach: 1832 - 1846. Charakter nokturnów określa się stwierdzeniem, iż są to "pieśni nocy" - nocy zarówno spokojnej, jak i burzliwej, miłosnej, itd.
