"Islamei" to fantazja orientalna na fortepian solo Miliego A. Balakirewa (1837 - 1910) - rosyjskiego kompozytora, Co ciekawe, był on samoukiem i nigdy nie ukończył żadnej szkoły muzycznej. Należał do grupy rosyjskich kompozytorów "Potężna Gromadka", w której był programowym przywódcą. Wszelkie uwago dotyczące wykonawstwa zostały podane przez edytora we wstępie publikacji. Of the five Russian composers of the Russian national school (also called "innovators", the mighty five", "the mighty handful"), Mili Alexejewitsch Balakirev (1837 - 1910) was the circle's ruling spirit and its - sometimes dictatorial - teacher of composition (to whose categorical demands, among other things, we may ascribe the astonishing artistic output achieved by a Borodin or a Mussorgsky). The sole professionalism, which he compared with musical academicism. And yet one can observe in his work a curious sense of frustration in the rounding - off and completion of his compositions. Typical of Balakirev's inspiration, which was quickly stimulated but then tailed off under the pressure of his own hypercritical standards, are the varying fortunes of his sonata in B minor, the composition of which was spread over about 50 years. Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856) był niemieckim kompozytorem i krytykiem muzycznym. Jest najbardziej znanym kompozytorem romantycznym XIX wieku.''Novelletten'' to zbiór ośmiu lekkich i wesołych utworów fortepianowych. Schumann uczynił każdy z przeciętnie podobnych utworów, znacząco inny. Każda z części różni się pod względem charakteru i kolorystyki od reszty. ''Up tonow i have publisched four volumes of Novelletten; imntimately connected, they were written with grat pleasure and are on the average light and cheerful, apart from a few, where I came to the bottom'' wrote Schumann to H. Hirschbach on 30th June 1839. This Reminiscence is given almost casually at the end of the letter, and yet each word is so concise, so telling that it can e taken as a point of departure for certain considerations on the problems raised by the inner conections beetwen the eight pieces, each very different in form and colouring from the rest. Today, almost 200 years after the death of Domenico Scarlatti (1757), hundreds of his sonatas are still practically unknown to musicians, students and the public. This seems amazing at a time when there exists an almost unpresedented interest in harpsichord music, and when Scarlatti sonatas are listed on the program of scores of piano recitals.
