"Długo nie mogłem zdecydować, jaki ma być ten Koncert - patetyczny, liryczny, awangardowy czy tradycyjny? Wątpliwości i wahania nie opuszczały mnie przez długi czas. I oto pewnego przedpołudnia podczas przechadzki po białowieskim parku usłyszałem wreszcie tę długo poszukiwaną nutę - liryczną, nieco zadumaną, o wyraźnie kresowym zabarwieniu. Czym prędzej więc zacząłem szkicować partyturę, by po kilkunastu dniach mieć gotową wersję utworu. Rozpoczęły się pierwsze próby z solistą, pierwsze poprawki partii solowej pod kątem lepszego jej wyeksponowania, pełniejszego ukazania możliwości instrumentu. Wreszcie po paru latach i dziesiątkach spotkań z Tomaszem Strahlem partia wiolonczeli przybrała wiosną 1997 roku postać ostateczną. "For a long time I could not make up my mind what kind of Concerto it was going to be - pathos-laden, lyrical, avant-garde or traditional? I was beset with doubts and hesitations for a long time. Louis Karchin (ur. 1951) to kompozytor amerykański. Jest on autorem takich kompozycji, jak m.in. "Rhapsody for Orchestra", "American Visions", "Voyages, czy "Orpheus". Prezentowany utwór "Viola variations" Louisa Karchina to kompozycja w formie wariacji, polegająca na przekształcaniu wybranych motywów muzycznych. Wariacje te utrzymane są w XX-wiecznej harmonice współczesnej. W partii altówki odnaleźć można m. in. liczne tremola, tremolanda, flażolety, grę pizzicato, dwudźwięki oraz tryle. Partie fortepianu i altówki są potraktowane równorzędnie. Louis Karchin is the recipient of the 1985 Walter Hinrichsen Award. This is an annual award sponsored by C. F. Peters Corporation and presented via the auspices of the American Academy and Istitute of Arts and Letters. It consists of the engraving and publication in Edition Peters of a work by a gifted composer who has been selected by the Music Committee of the Academy. Pedal markings are indicated to clarify the notation of the desired effects. Additional use of the sostenuto pedal will be necessary in order to achieve an accurante rendition of the score.
