Commissioned by the Friends of Today's Music program of the Music Teachers' Association of California, this publication is a great follow-up to Bolcom's previous work, Nine Bagatelles (00294028). Includes notes from the composer for each selection.

Seven piano duets complete with a CD that includes a complete demo and then separate primo and secondo parts for each song. Titles include: I Love a Piano • I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise • Look for the Silver Lining • Sunday in London Town • They Didn't Believe Me • When the Curtain Falls • Yankee Doodle Blues.

"For a long time I could not make up my mind what kind of Concerto it was going to be - pathos-laden, lyrical, avant-garde or traditional? I was beset with doubts and hesitations for a long time. And then one morning, during a stroll in the Białowieża national park. I at last heard this longsought-for note - lyrical, a little pensive, clearly of bordeland provance in tone. I started to sketch the score quickly and the work was ready in a dozen or so days. The first rehearsals with the soloist followed, as well as the first revisions of the solo part to highlight it out and reveal more fully the instrument's potential. Finally, after several years and dozens of meetings with Tomasz Strahl, the cello part took final shape in spring 1997. The work was finished. You will find in it echoes of our Polish Eastern Bordeland - now and then in the music of the Concerto one will hear scraps of melodies and songs - once heard by me in the Vilnius region - enveloped in mild melancholy and sadness..."

Ben and I really enjoyed writing these pieces for You. We hope that Kate's lovely illustrations and the lyrics of each piece will encourage you to compose your own music, write your own poems and draw your own illustrations. There is a page for you to create your own rhythmic spells at the back of the book. Try out different ideas on your cello and then write them down. It is great fun to do.
When learning each new pieces, listen to Emma and Ben playing on the accompanying CD, then follow the instructions suggested at the top of each page.
Finally play along with Ben accompanying you. Have fun with noises!

"Travels" to cykl trzech utworów - podróży skomponowanych przez Davida Amrama. Utwór I - "Taos" to tradycyjna piosenka romantyczna pochodząca z Pueblo Taos w północnym Nowym Meksyku. Utwór II - Andante - Blues napisany jest w formie tematu z wariacjami. Trąbka posługuje się tu techniką twelve bar. Utwór III - Taxim - to kompozycja w formie ronda. W kadencję wpleciona jest melodia "Aya Zehn", której kompozytor nauczył się w Kairze podczas podróży koncertowej w 1978 roku.
Całość David Amram zadedykował swojej żonie Lorze Lee i synkowi Adamowi na pierwsze urodziny. Premiera "Travels" miała miejsce w szkole muzycznej w Julliard 26 marca 1985 roku.

The main theme with a hint a of cabaret - style is introduce by the violin in the 3rd measure, and then picked up by the cello in a slightly modified version and so both string instruments conduct a polyphonic dialogue throughout the whole Allegretto. Having aquainted ondeself thoroughly with Part One of the Trio, one gets the impression that that the composer has two obsessions (in the positive sense of the word). Rhythm and Art of Counterpoint, and i would describe Ms. Jonas' harmonic sense as Controlled Sonority. Part Two - Elegy: The texture based on very interesting harmony (predominatly sonority); construction of the piece is excellent with beautoful culmination in 15th and 16th measure, and on top of that a certain special longing and ruefulness noticeable in nearly every measure. Part Three - Rondino: The palette of sounds plays a insignificant role in this work (glissando and col legno of strings), but one also notices a transformation, the Piano Trio becomes a Jazz Combo!

The beginning of the book introduces finger numbers, the black-key and white-key groups, and basic rhythm patterns. Directional reading is taught first by finger number, then by note name, and then by interval (stop, skip, and repeat). Once the students are introduced to the staff, they learn reading guides Bass F and Treble G and read by interval in several different hand positions.
