Oratorium "Mesjasz" Händla powstało w 1741 roku. Dzieło składa się z trzech części: cz. 1 - zapowiedź przyjścia Mesjasza; cz. 2 - opowieść o życiu, śmierci i zmartwychwstaniu Mesjasza; cz. 3 - misja zbawienia ludzkości. Oratorium to Händel skomponował w przeciągu dwóch tygodni w podziękowaniu dla Irlandczyków za ich gościnę. Kompozycja została bardzo dobrze przyjęta przez publiczność i zaliczana jest obecnie do najdoskonalszych utworów na przełomie wieków.
