Prezentowana publikacja zawiera sonatę na flet i fortepian pod tytułem "Undine" niemieckiego kompozytora, pianisty i dyrygenta - Carla Reinecke (18241910). Utwór inspirowany jest, popularną w XIX wieku, legendą o nimfie Undine, która by osiągnąć nieśmiertelność musiała zdobyć miłość człowieka. Muzyka Reinecke nie jest jednak programowa, nie opisuje żadnych wydarzeń z legendy. Utwór ten posiada jednak specyficzny koloryt brzmieniowy kojarzący się w pewien sposób z baśniowością i historią Undine. The Undine legend concerns the ill-fated union of a beautiful water-nymph with Huldebrand, a young knight. Only by winning the true love of a mortal man can Undine hope to acquire an immortal soul. Her father, a powerful underwater prince, desires this for her and substitutes her while she is still a small child for the only daughter of a pious fisherman, assigning Undine's uncle Kuhleborn to oversee her development from a discreet distance. This tale achived great popularity in the 19th century in a version by Friedrich de la Motte Fouque, which would have been familiar to Reinecke. The content of this collage from Mozart's well-known opera "Don GIovanni" is defined by the original subtitle Il Dissoluto Punito (the Libertine Punished). This refers of course to the infamous seducer Don Giovanni, who is represented in this piece by the solo tuba. Right at the start he tries to get his hands on Donna Anna, who calls for help to her father, the Commendatore (trombone). The latter hurries on to the scene and challenges Giovanni to a duel. The father is killed, but Giovanni calmly goes on to seek his next conquest. However both his attempts, first with Zerlina (La ci darem' la mano) then later his mocking serenade to Donna Elvira are interrupted by the ghostly voice of the murdered Commendatore. George Crumb (ur. 1929) to amerykański kompozytor awangardowej muzyki współczesnej. W jego twórczości dominują poszukiwania niekonwencjonalnej kolorystyki, oraz nowych technik kompozytorskich. Utwór "An Idyll for the Misbegotten" inspirowany jest tematem utworu "Syrinx" Claude Debussy'ego oraz słowami wiersza chińskiego poety Ssu-K'ung Shu: "Księżyc zachodzi. Ptaki drżą ze strachu i trawa usycha". Utwór ma obrazować trudną sytuację dotyczącą przemiany gatunku homo sapiens nie szanującego żywej natury, która wskutek tego obumiera. Dzieło skomponowane jest na flet poprzeczny oraz trzy perkusje. "I feel that "misbegotten" well describes the fateful and melancholy predicament of the species homo sapiens at the present moment in time. Mankind has become ever more "illegitimate" in the natural world of the plants and animals. The ancient sense of brotherhood with all life-forms (so poignantly expressed in the poetry of St. Francis of Assisi) has gradually and relentlessly eroded, and consequently we find ourselves monarchs of a dying world.
