Zbiór zawiera 7 cyklów wariacji na fortepian solo Ludwiga van Beethovena. Znajdziemy tu m.in. "15 wariacji na temat z symfonii Eroica" i "33 wariacje na temat Walca Diabellego". Utwory te odznaczają się wysokim stopniem trudności i dlatego przeznaczone są dla wyjątkowo zaawansowanych i biegłych technicznie pianistów. Nowadays, there is a general desire, when reprinting old works, to provide as authentic a text as possible, free from any additions on the part of editor or publisher. This is usually difficult, for reasons that will be outlined below, and in most cases one can only attempt to find out what the composer really wanted. Moreover, the "Urtext" (original text) is not a final solution, since for correct interpretation one must also be conversant with the performing conventions of the period - thus an Urtext in fact increases the responsibility of the performer. Ninieteenth-century editions tried to relieve the player of this responsibility, but were often based on insufficient knowledge of performing conventions, and on an excessively subjective approach, so that it was rarely possible to ascertain the composer's true intentions.
