Three Love Songs for High or Medium Voice and Piano

These three hitherto unpublished love songs remained unknown to Strauss' biographers until I discovered them by chance in the possession of the niece of the young woman for whom they were written in the summer of 1883. The 19 - year - old composer became acquainted with Lotti Speyer at bad Heilbrunn, a resort near Munich, and the two young persons saw a good deal of each other in the ten days that the two families were there. Fräulein Speyer was the daughter of a Frankfurt lawyer and the granddaughter of the well - known song composer, Wilhelm Speyer. Although they never saw each other again, Lotti and Richard continued to exchange letters for four years. The deep impression made on Strauss by the charming girl is reflected in his letters and in the intimate nature of the three songs he sent het in manuscript.
