Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Feliks (1809 - 1847) to niemiecki kompozytor, pianista i dyrygent tworzący w okresie romantyzmu. Autor dzieł orkiestrowych (symfonii, uwertur - np. "Sen nocy letniej"), oraz muzyki kameralnej - w tym wielu miniatur fortepianowych. Jego słynne "Pieśni bez słów" na fortepian wyznaczyły trop dla rozwoju romantycznej liryki instrumentalnej. Mendelssohn skomponował 48 pieśni bez słów, które zebrane zostały w sześciu zbiorach. Pośród tych miniatur odnaleźć można utwory o różnorodnym nastroju i charakterze, posiadające zazwyczaj budowę trzyczęściową - ABA. Niektóre z pieśni bez słów kompozytor opatrzył dodatkowymi tytułami, np. "Pieśń weneckiego Gondoliera", "Marsz żałobny", czy "Kołysanka". Prezentowana publikacja gromadzi w sobie wszystkie pieśni bez słów Mendelssohna. Pochodzą one z opusów 19, 30, 38, 53, 62, 67, 85 i 102.
Felix Mendelssohn-Batholdy (1809 - 1847). His surname the "happy", "fortunate one" applied to the whole life of that writer of romantic music. The son of rich parents - his father was a banker - his grand father was the exegetic philosopher Moses M. - his general and musical education was fostered with the gratest care from the very beginning, nor could the advantages of a happy home-life fail to exert the most beneficial influence upon his mind. Musicians of the present day are as prone to under-estimate Mendelssohn, as his contemporaries were over-rate him. He was not only a Master of form based upon the classic, he and, in a still higher degree, Schumann are out most prolific romantic composers, Marschner and Weber their gratest predecessors.
