Wilhelm von Grunelius urodził się w Hidelbergu, w Niemczech. Pobierał lekcje fortepianu i fletu, a mając 15 lat dał swój pierwszy publiczny koncert fortepianowy. Studiował na wydziałach fortepianu i kompozycji w Berlinie i Hanowerze pod kierunkiem Karla Engela, Hansa Chemina - Petit, Nadii Boulanger i innych.
