Utwór "Gli Elementi" jest eksperymentem Jeana Balisata, w którym istotą jest przeciwstawianie instrumentów na zasadzie podobieństw zjawisk atmosferycznych i przyrodniczych. Przykładowo: instrumenty perkusyjne takie, jak: wibrafon, marimba i ksylofon wychodzą naprzeciw stłumionym kornetom prezentując odgłosy płynących górskich strumyków. Całość w opracowaniu na orkiestrę dętą blaszaną i perkusje. Attempting to evoke the four elements in music allows the composer to experiment with contrasting atmospheres, specially in the use of the percussion. The earth, concrete, powerful, hymn-like, makes use of the physical, almost primitive effect of bass drum, timpani, tom-toms and bongos. In the following movement the composer portrays water, streaming down from the hills and meandering in the meadows, pliant and fluid. The mallets (vibraphone, marimba and xylophone) come to the fore here, as they do also in the next movement, the air, where they become trasparent and ethereal, blending with the sound of the muted cornets. Fire, alternately mysterious, spell - binding, terrifying and destructive, forms the last movement of the suite and makes use of the varied effects provided by drums, mallets, cymbals, tam-tam and woodblocks as well as the whole range of brass instruments. George Crumb (ur. 1929) to amerykański kompozytor awangardowej muzyki współczesnej. W jego twórczości dominują poszukiwania niekonwencjonalnej kolorystyki, oraz nowych technik kompozytorskich. Utwór "An Idyll for the Misbegotten" inspirowany jest tematem utworu "Syrinx" Claude Debussy'ego oraz słowami wiersza chińskiego poety Ssu-K'ung Shu: "Księżyc zachodzi. Ptaki drżą ze strachu i trawa usycha". Utwór ma obrazować trudną sytuację dotyczącą przemiany gatunku homo sapiens nie szanującego żywej natury, która wskutek tego obumiera. Dzieło skomponowane jest na flet poprzeczny oraz trzy perkusje. "I feel that "misbegotten" well describes the fateful and melancholy predicament of the species homo sapiens at the present moment in time. Mankind has become ever more "illegitimate" in the natural world of the plants and animals. The ancient sense of brotherhood with all life-forms (so poignantly expressed in the poetry of St. Francis of Assisi) has gradually and relentlessly eroded, and consequently we find ourselves monarchs of a dying world.
