Eric Clapton w momencie rozpoczęcia solowej kariery był już wielką postacią rockowej sceny. Wcześniej pokazał swoje nieprzeciętne umiejętności grając w supergrupie Cream czy wcześniej w The Yardbirds i Bluesbreakers Johna Mayalla. Jako solista zadebiutował w 1970 roku płytą "Eric Clapton". Na niej pojawił się pierwszy z wielu solowych przebojów artysty - "After Midnight" (napisany przez J.J. Cale'a).
