Jako dziecko Carter ćwiczył na wiolonczeli, marząc o karierze muzyka klasycznego. Opanował też biegle inne instrumenty - skrzypce, klarnet i puzon, jednak instrumentem swojego życia uczynił kontrabas. Z czasem zmienił swoje zainteresowania muzyczne i zdecydował się poświęcić jazzowi, kiedy uświadomił sobie, że jako artyście murzyńskiemu ciężko będzie przebić się na rynku muzyki klasycznej, a ambicja i poczucie własnej wartości nie pozwoliłyby mu na przyjęcie drugoplanowej pozycji. Kiedy rozpoczął stałe występy z muzykami jazzowymi w kwintecie Chico Hamiltona, miał już ponad 20 lat.
