Of the five Russian composers of the Russian national school (also called "innovators", the mighty five", "the mighty handful"), Mili Alexejewitsch Balakirev (1837 - 1910) was the circle's ruling spirit and its - sometimes dictatorial - teacher of composition (to whose categorical demands, among other things, we may ascribe the astonishing artistic output achieved by a Borodin or a Mussorgsky). The sole professionalism, which he compared with musical academicism. And yet one can observe in his work a curious sense of frustration in the rounding - off and completion of his compositions. Typical of Balakirev's inspiration, which was quickly stimulated but then tailed off under the pressure of his own hypercritical standards, are the varying fortunes of his sonata in B minor, the composition of which was spread over about 50 years. Kompozycja "Berceuse héroique" była odpowiedzią Debussy'ego na artykuł pt. "King Albert's Book" opublikowany podczas pierwszej wojny światowej (zimą 1914 roku) w londyńskim "Daily Telegraph". Znany angielski powieściopisarz - Hall Caine złożył w nim hołd wygnanemu z kraju królowi Belgii oraz belgijczykom. Na artykuł ten zareagowało wielu artystów - m. in. Edward German, malarz Monet, filozof Bergson oraz pisarze Rolland i Gosse. "Berceuse héroique" Debussy dedykował królowi Albertowi oraz żołnierzom belgijskim. Utwór nie ma jednak w rzeczywistości militarnego, heroicznego charakteru. Panuje w nim raczej spokojny i smutny nastrój. Kompozycja składa się z kilku odcinków o różnych tempach. Debussy zastosował w niej trzy plany melodyczne (zapis na trzech pięcioliniach). "Berceuse héroique" was Debussy's contribution to "King Albert's Book", published during the war winter of 1914 by the London "Daily Telegraph". The then famous English novelist Hall Caine had approached a number of allied intellectuals for tributes to the king of the Belgians. Among these who responded were Elgar, Edward German, Messager, the painter Monet, the philosopher Bergson and the writers Romain Rolland and Edmund Gosse. In his correspondece Dabussy's is apologetic about the piece: "the best I could do". In fact, his palett, more resourceful than that of any other composer, does not seem to have possessed colours for military heroism; not did he think "La Brabançonne", the Belgian National Anthem, sufficintly rousing to instil it "in those not brought up with it".
