Franz Schubert to jeden z najsłynniejszych twórców pieśni w romantyzmie. Stworzył on ponad sześćset dzieł wokalnych i wokalno - instrumentalnych (w tym przede wszystkim utwory na głos solowy z fortepianem). Inspiracją dla jego utworów była przede wszystkim poezja (m. in. teksty Wolfganaga Goethe). Formę swoich pieśni uzależniał więc od budowy wybranego tekstu (często wykorzystywał formę pieśni zwrotkowej lub przekomponowanej). Schubert jako jeden z pierwszych kompozytorów nadał ogromne znaczenie partii fortepianu. Prezentowana publikacja zawiera trzy cykle pieśni w opracowaniu na głos wokalny (mezzosopran) i fortepian Franza Schuberta - "Die schöne Mullerin" op. 25 ("Piękna młynarka"), "Winterreise" op. 89 ("Podróż zimowa") oraz wydany po śmierci kompozytora zbiór "Schwanengesang" ("Łabędzi śpiew"). Dodatkowo do publikacji załączono pieśń "Herbst" D 945. Wszystkie kompozycje zostały wydane w oparciu o oryginalne rękopisy kompozytora. This edition fo Franz Schubert's three song cycles "Die schöne Mullerin", "Winterreise" and "Schwanengesang" offers the results of a through study of the sources in conjunction with experience gathered in concert halls throughout the world. The editord encountered great difficultied in revising "Die schöne Mullerin". Schubert's autograph is considered lost; only no. 15, "Eifersucht und Stolz", exists in manuscript. The autograph transcriptions of nos. 7, 8 and 9 used by Max Freidländer in his revised edition, and describes in his critical notes, have disappeared.
