Marin Marais (1656 - 1728) - wirtuoz violi da gamba i kompozytor. Prezentowane wariacje napisał ze specyficznym zamiarem dla różnorodnych instrumentów, w tym dla fletu poprzecznego. Temat wariacji stał się w ówczesnych czasach na tyle popularny, iż wykorzystał go później m. in. F. Liszt. Marin Marais (1656 - 1728), a bass - viol (viola da gamba) virtuoso and recognized composer, wrote these variations for the specific purpose of having them transcribed for other instruments, including the flute.
