Variation 19

Kol Nidrei is one of the best loved and most frequently performed of Bruch's work. It is based on an ancient Hebrew melody which is sung on the eve of the Day of Atonement.
Max Bruch came to England in 1880 and Koi Nidrei was written in Liverpool in the same year, shortly after his appontment as conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. It was written for the Liverpool Jewish Community and received its first performance in Leipzig in October 1881.
This work, although in one continuous movement, is divided into two main sections. The first part is concerned with the announcement of the Jewish theme, the soloist here taking the role of Cantor, followed by free variation upon it.
The second part of the work provides a contrast. The tempo is increased and the minor key gives way to the major. This second section is perhaps more in keeping with Buch's own romantic style.

Louis Karchin (ur. 1951) to kompozytor amerykański. Jest on autorem takich kompozycji, jak m.in. "Rhapsody for Orchestra", "American Visions", "Voyages, czy "Orpheus". Prezentowany utwór "Viola variations" Louisa Karchina to kompozycja w formie wariacji, polegająca na przekształcaniu wybranych motywów muzycznych. Wariacje te utrzymane są w XX-wiecznej harmonice współczesnej. W partii altówki odnaleźć można m. in. liczne tremola, tremolanda, flażolety, grę pizzicato, dwudźwięki oraz tryle. Partie fortepianu i altówki są potraktowane równorzędnie.
