The present method book will hopefully be usefull to students and professional organists in pointing the way to the numerous possibilities of improvising. A wealth of material is presented herein, begining with fundamental exercises in harmonizing simple chorale melodies and progressing to the improvisation of larger musical forms. In order to use the manual succesfully, a working knowledge if the basics if music theory and functional harmony are presupposed. Additionally, a moderate technical ability is required first working out the first sections of the method, while the larger forms require advanced skills. According to the interest of the player, it is possible to commence at several different places in the book.

The position of the body must be relaxed, straight and facing the center of the organ. The player must completely avoid resting the hands on the manuals or holding on to the organ console or the organ bench. The feet are to be used with such ease that the pedal stops are fully and firmly stuck, without in any way resting the body on them. The tips, rather than the heels, should be used, since this enables the feet to have more space for evasive action, especially when crossing above or below each other. If both feet alternate, the right foot is preferable used over the left one in the middle and lower range, when leading in the direction of the upper stops, so that in crossing the left foot is always below the right one. Exceptions occur only when upper stops are interspersed, or if the height of the pedal makes it more practical to set the left above the right foot.
