W twórczości Fryderyka Chopina szczególne miejsce zajmują walce oparte na prostych melodiach i formach. Łącznie Chopin skomponował 18 walów, z których wydzielić można dwa typy kompozycji: typ kompozycji szybkiej, wirtuozowskiej ("Grande valse brillante") i typ walca lirycznego, melancholijnego, o wolniejszym tempie (m. in. Walc cis-moll op. 64 nr 2). W niniejszej publikacji zawarto 15 najpiękniejszych Walców fortepianowych Chopina, opalcowanych przez Carla Mikuli. Of the Chopin Waltzes I have said that they are dances for the soul, not the body. But their animated rhythms, insouciant airs and brilliant, coquettish atmosphere, the true ball - room atmosphere, seem to smile at this exaggeration. The Waltzes are the most objective of the Chopin works, and only in a few of them is there a hint of the spleen and melancholy of the Nocturnes and Scherzi. They are less intimate in the psychic sense, but are exquisite exemplars of social intimacy and aristocratic abandon. As Schumann declared, the dancers of these Waltzes should be at least countesses. Despite their intoxicating movement there is high - bred reserve, and never a hint of the brawling peasants of Beethoven, Grieg, Brahms, Tschaikowsky or Dvorak. Yet little of Vienna is in Chopin. The word "walzen" appeared in the mid-eighteenth century as a description of a mode of dancing, a whirling of couples in close embrace. Various titles were at this time commonly given to the popular tripletime dances of southern Germany, Austria and Bavaria, such as Dreher, Weller, Schleifer and Ländler. They were collectively known as Deutscher (German dances). By the late eighteenth century the title Walzer had also established itself and become to a certain extent interchangeable with Deutscher and Ländler. The waltz was, however, already little faster. Its popularity increased rapidly as it spread to other part of Europe, eclipsing several other dance forms and causing objections to be raised on moral grounds because of the physical closeness of the partners and speed of the music: in some areas of Switzelrnad it was even prohibited.
