Bill Evans był jednym z najważniejszych pianistów jazzu nowoczesnego. Studiował w Southeastern Louisiana University i nowojorskiej Mannes School of Music. Evans reprezentował nowy styl, charakteryzujący się oryginalnym podejściem do harmonii. Posługiwał się dość często pedałem, nazywany był poetą fortepianu, swoje improwizacje budował racjonalnie, z pełną świadomością. Wpływ Evansa na innych pianistów można porównać do wpływu Johna Coltrane'a na saksofonistów. At one time it used to be said, disparagingly, by people who should have known better, that Bill Evans was in reality not a jazz player at all. He was, they claimed, no more than a superior kind of cocktail pianist. Though somewhat misguided, it's easy to see where the idea comes from: the mistaken belief that the only essential element in jazz is 'swing' and, consequently, "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing"! His father, Abraham Mendelssohn, who was the son of the eminent philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, was an influential banker and played an important role in the social, intellectual and artistic city of Berlin. He married Lea Soloman, the granddaughter of one of Berlin's most affluent citizens. Their four children were given the finest education available. Te ostatnie należą do jego najbardziej znanych prac. ''Sonaty biblijne'' to muzyka pełna emocjonalnych stanów, głównie za przyczyną historii zaczerpniętych z biblii. Cykl ''sonat biblijnych'' składa się z 6 tomów, zawierających po 1 sonacie opartej na tekście biblijnym. Niniejsza Sonata nr 5 opiera się na Księdze Sędziów opisującej odwrócenie się Gideona od Boga podczas wyjścia z Egiptu.
