The Red Violin Caprices (duration: ca. 10 min.) are derived from John Corigliano's music for The Red Violin, which received the 1999 Academy Award for Best Original Score. The Caprices were composed especially for Joshua Bell. 'These Caprices, composed in conjunction with the score for François Girard's film The Red Violin, take a spacious, troubadour-inspired theme and vary it both linearly and stylistically. These variations intentionally evoke Baroque, Gypsy, and arch-Romantic idioms as they examine the same materials (a dark, seven-chord chaconne as well as that principal theme) from differing aural viewpoints. The Caprices were created and ordered to reflect the structure of the film, in which Bussotti, a fictional 18th-century violin maker, crafts his greatest violin for his soon-to-be-born son. When tragedy claims wife and child, the grief-stricken Bussotti, in a gesture both ardent and macabre, infuses the blood of his beloved into the varnish of the instrument. Their fates thus joined, the violin travels across three centuries through Vienna, London, Shanghai and Montreal, passing through the hands of a doomed child prodigy, a flamboyant virtuoso, a haunted Maoist commissar, and at last a willful Canadian expert, whose own plans for the violin finally complete the circle of parent and child united in art.' - John Corigliano

II Symfonię B-dur op. 19 Karol Szymanowski napisał w latach 1909 - 1910. Pierwsze szkice powstały w kwietniu 1909 r., szkic całości był gotowy we wrześniu 1909 r. Orkiestracja trwała od października 1909 r. do końca 1910 r., a nawet (ostatnie stronice części II) do początku 1911 r. Był to czwarty utwór Szymanowskiego na orkiestrę symfoniczną, po Uwerturze koncertowej E-dur op. 12 (1904 - 1905), nie doprowadzonej do kompletności I Symfonii f-moll op. 15 (1906 - 1907) i Pentezilei, pieśni na sopran i orkiestrę op. 18 do słów Stanisława Wyspiańskiego.
II Symfonia wykonana została po raz pierwszy w Warszawie 7 IV 1911 przez orkiestrę Filharmonii Warszawskiej pod dyrekcją Grzegorza Fitelberga, następnie pod tą samą batutą w Berlinie 1 XII 1911, Wiedniu 18 I 1912, Lipsku 29 I 1912 i Krakowie 25 IV 1912 (grała tu orkiestra Wiener Konzert - Verein). Mimo powodzenia u publiczności i uznania ze strony krytyków, jakie dzieło zdobyło, Szymanowski nie był zadowolony z szaty orkiestrowej II Symfonii. Wiele jednak czasu upłynęło, zanim znalazł wolną chwilę, by dokonać koniecznych, wedle niego, retuszy, redukcji i poprawek instrumentacyjnych, a nawet formalnych. Sposobność taka nadarzyła się w lipcu 1927 r., kiedy kompozytor przebywał w Chojnicach, majątku przyjaciół na Pomorzu, reperując zdrowie i nerwy, w latach 1926 - 1927 wyraźnie pogarszające się. Nie był w owym czasie zdolny do pracy twórczej, zajęcie się dawnym utworem stanowiło jej swoisty substytut.
II Symfonia składa się z dwóch części: I - Allegro moderato. Grazioso (350 taktów), oraz II - Lento. Temat z wariacjami (291 taktów), którą kończy Fuga. Finale. Allegro moderato molto energico (119 taktów).

Publikacja zawiera facsimile rękopisu.

Karol Szymanowski wrote the Second Symphony in B flat major Op. 19 in the years 1909 - 1910. The first sketches were made in April 1909 and a draft of the whole work was ready by September 1909. The orchestration occupied the composer from October 1909 until the end of 1910 and even (in the case of the last pages of the second movement) the beginning of 1911.
It was Szymanowski's fourth work for symphony orchestra following the Concert Overture in E major Op. 12 (1904 - 1905), the incomplete First Symphony in F minor Op. 15 (1906 - 1907) and Pentezilea, the song for soprano and orchestra Op. 18 to words by Stanisław Wyspiański.
The Second Symphony was performed for the first time in Warsaw on 7 April 1911 by the orchestra of the Warsaw Philharmonia conducted by Grzegorz Fitelberg and then under the same conductor in Berlin on 1 December 1911, Vienna on 18 January 1912, Leipzig on 29 January 1912 and Cracow on 25 April 1912 (where it was performed by the Wiener Konzert - Verein orchestra). In spite of its success with audiences and praise from the critics, Szymanowski was not pleased with the orchestration of the Second Symphony. Some considerable time elapsed, however, before he had the opportunity to make what he considered to be the necessary instrument and even formal revisions, reductions and amendments. The occasion arose in July 1927 when the composer was staying at Chojnice, an estate belonging to friends in Pomerania, rebuilding his health and nervous condition which, in the years 1926 - 1927, had markedly deteriorated. At thet time he was not capable of undertaking creative work and attending to the old piece provided him with a substitute.
The Second Symphony consists of two movements: - Allegro moderato. Grazioso (350 bars) and - Lento. Theme with Variations (291 bars), which leads without a break to the Fugue. Finale. Allegro moderato molto energico (119 bars).
