Scott Joplin was born on November 24, 1868, in Texarana, Texas. He died in New York City on April 1, 1917, on the very day America entered the first World War. The Joplin were a very talented family musically. Giles was a non - proffesional violinist of exceptional talent. Florence had a fine voice and played the banjo. Scott's older brother, Manroe, and two younger brothers, William and ROberts, as well as his sisters, Myrtle and Ossie, sang and played the guitar. Some folks think of "Ragtime" as something heard mainly in saloons, played (and most frequently improvised) by pianist wearing the inevitable derby, smoking big cigars and going boom - te - di - boom with an um - pah - pah bass. W "Chantefleurs et chantefables" Witold Lutosławski umuzycznił dziewięć krótkich rymowanek o kwiatach i zwierzętach ułożonych w 1940 roku przez francuskiego poetę Roberta Desnosa (1900 - 1945). Słowo "Chantefables" ("śpiewobajki") Desnos wymyślił dla miniaturowych opowiadań o zwierzętach, ptakach i owadach, a "Chanteflers" ("śpiewokwiaty") dla równie krótkich, lirycznych wierszy o kwiatach. Do poezji Desnosa Lutosławski sięgnął już wcześniej, komponując pieśni na baryton i orkiestrę "Les espaces du sommeil". W onirycznej atmosferze przypominającej surrealistyczne "Przestrzenie snu" (1975) rozpoczyna się również to dzieło - "Pięknością nocy" (La Belle-de-nuit) - kwiatem, który zakwita po zachodzie słońca i dlatego we Francji nosi takie właśnie miano. Muzyka pomaga ujrzeć w wyobraźni obraz sennych marzeń unoszących się do księżyca. Na "Różę" (La Rose) sen sprowadza żar letniego słońca. In his "Chantefleurs et chantefables", Lutosławski set nine short rhymes about flowers and animals written by the French poet Robert Desnos (1900 - 45) in 1940. The word "Chantefables" ("song-fables") was invented by Desnos to refer to miniature stories about animals, birds and insects, whereas the word "Chantefleurs" ("song-flowers") denotes correspondingly short lirycal poems about flowers. Lutosławski had already used Desnos' poetry in his songs for baritone and orchestra, Les espaces du sommeil. The work Chantedleurs et chantefables also begins with a dream-like atmosphere - reminiscent of the surrealistic Les espaces du sommeil (1975) - in The Beauty of the Night (La Belle-de-nuit), denoting a flower, which blooms after the sunset and therefore is called like that in France. The music helps us to form in our minds an image of dreams floating to the moon. The Rose (La Rose) drifts into sleep in the heat of the summer sun. Throughout his life Lutosławski declared himself an opponent of programmatic and illustrative music, but the sound painting in Chantefleurs et chantefables is simply striking. Musical humour appears, in the first place, in the four zoological portraits - of the grasshopper, the tortoise, the alligator and a swarm of butterflies. The grasshoper hops with abandon, the tortoise plods along and dreams. The hungry alligator tries in vain to entrap an appetizing little black boy, while the swarm of 300 million butterflies drink up a cup of broth in Chatillon, taking it away from the local people.
