The Art of Fingering

Brahms (1833 - 1897) wrote Two Rhapsodies for piano Op. 79 in 1879. These works, full of youthful energy and emotional power, continually enchant with their freshness and depth. The characteristically Brahmsian piano texture is widely spaced, reveals a tendency towards polyrhythm and contrapuntal configurations and hence "does not lie easily under the fingers". It serves exclusively to express the musical content and never to make a display of virtuosity. The original text and a number of later editions served as a basis in the preparation of the present edition. Performing suggestions, given in brackets, as well as fingering, are editorial.

The variants marked as ossia were given this label by Chopin or were added in his hand to pupils' copies; variants without this designation ate the result of discrepancies in the texts of authentic c\version or an inhability to establish an unambiguous reading of the text.
Chopin's original fingering is indicated in large bold - type numerals, 1 2 3 4 5, in contrast to the editors' fingering which is written in small italic numerals, 1 2 3 4 5. Wherever authentic fingering is enclosed in parentheses this means that it was not present in the primary sources, but added by Chopin to his pupils' copies. The dashed signs indicating the distribution of parts between the hands come from the editors.

The six cello sonatas published as Op. 24 in 1783, were composed in the galant style. The bass part was clearly intended for a second cello. In our edition we have provided a simple piano accompaniment to replace the string bass, so that the works can be performed as concert pieces. The Violoncello I part in the piano score follows the principles of urtext editions (we tacitly corrected the very few errors of the sources). The two string parts are contained in the performing score, which includes fingering and ornamentation.

Rosalyn Tureck has been called 'The High Priestess of Bach' and is world-renowned as a scholar and performer. There is a considerable amount of left hand fingering given here, partly because I think it will prove helpful in a piece containing much campanela, and partly to clearly indicate where the notes should be taken, albeit with some individual choices made by other players. The fingering gives the 'flavour'.
