Russian is a beautiful language, and a musical one, as anyone who has heard a native - speaker reciting poetry can attest. But it would be idle to suggest thatit is straightforward for Westerners to speak, read or write, let alone to sing. Anyone who uses Alexander Well's excellent singing translations in this volume will be able to convey much of the expressive quality of these wonderful arias. Even so, some knowledge of the original language will contribute significantly to releasing the music's full dramatic power; and with CD recordings and specialist language teaching now more readily available than ever, there are strong incentives to aim for performance in Russian.
