Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907) to kompozytor norweski, którego twórczość jest głęboko zakorzeniona w skandynawskiej muzyce ludowej. Wielokrotnie włączał on do swoich kompozycji elementy rodzimego folku. Edvard Grieg was one of those composers, who were linked in an exceptionally intimate way to the folk-music of their country. So closely was he tied to it, so mentally bound to its spitritual world, that it is sometimes difficult, even for the conoisseur, to decide, which motives Grieg has taken from the folk-music and which themes are his own. The Norwegian folk-music offers at any rate the direct and indirect foundation on which his lifework is built up. The present collection of small piano-piece is taken of the "Nordic Dances and Folk-tunes" Op. 17 and "Norwegian Folk-tunes" Op. 66.

These Norwegian Slatter (Slatter is the usual Norwegian name for the peasant's dance), now for the first time brought before the public in their original form for the violin (or for the so-called Hardangerfiddle) and re-arranged for the piano, were written down after an old gleeman in Telemarken, Those who can appreciate such musie, will be delighted at the originality, the blending of fine, soft gracefulness with sturdy almost uncouth power and untamed wildness as regards melody and more particularly rhythm, contained in them. This music, - which is handed down to us from an age when the culture of the Norwegian peasant was isolated in its solitary mountain - valleys from the outer world, to which fact it owes its whole originality, - bears the stamp of an imagination as daring in its flight as it is peculiar.
