Kenny G a właściwie Gorelik uczył się gry na saksofonie już w dzieciństwie. W 1974 r. wyjechał w trasę koncertową (do Europy) z Franklin High School Orchestra. Dwa lata później należał w Seattle do Love Unlimited Orchestra Barry’ego White’a, później zaczął studia na University of Washington (księgowość).
