Postać Michała Kleofasa Ogińskiego jeszcze za życia otoczona była legendami. Sam wspominał, że w grudniu 1790 roku czytał w londyńskich gazetach, iż wraz z żoną utonął w czasie katastrofy statku. Potem nieraz dochodziły do niego wieści o samobójstwie, które rzekomo popełnił "z powodu nieszczęśliwej miłości".
Historyczne znaczenie twórczości Ogińskiego polega na tym, iż był on pierwszym kompozytorem polskim, który tworzył niewielkie utwory instrumentalne oparte na narodowych tańcach polskich. Sam kompozytor wielokrotnie podkreślał, że jego polonezy nie są przeznaczone do tańca, podobnie jak późniejsza twórczość innych polskich kompozytorów, aż do wielkich dokonań Chopina włącznie.
