Kenny G a właściwie Gorelik uczył się gry na saksofonie już w dzieciństwie. W 1974 r. wyjechał w trasę koncertową (do Europy) z Franklin High School Orchestra. Dwa lata później należał w Seattle do Love Unlimited Orchestra Barry’ego White’a, później zaczął studia na University of Washington (księgowość). Pierwszych nagrań dokonał z miejscową grupą funkową Cold, Bold & Together oraz towarzyszył wielu gwiazdom występującym gościnnie w Seattle. Po ukończeniu studiów dołączył do jazzrockowej formacji ,,Jeff Lorber Fusion" współpracującej z wytwórnią Arista Records. W 1981 r. podpisał z nią kontrakt na autorskie płyty, z których największym powodzeniem cieszył się album "Duotones" (producentami byli Preston Glass i Narada Michael Walden).
