Bill Evans był jednym z najważniejszych pianistów jazzu nowoczesnego. Studiował w Southeastern Louisiana University i nowojorskiej Mannes School of Music. Evans reprezentował nowy styl, charakteryzujący się oryginalnym podejściem do harmonii. Posługiwał się dość często pedałem, nazywany był poetą fortepianu, swoje improwizacje budował racjonalnie, z pełną świadomością.
