When the American Version of Are You Experienced? hit the record racks in September of 1967, it was like a tidal shock wave, a conflagration that would wash over the world of music, leaving it forever changed. I remember sitting in a friend's parents' living room (his folks were out of the house, of course) with the sound turned way up, and my ears blitzed by the torrents of sheer power that blazed through the speakers. This was a true mind - bending experience back then, no doubt the desired effect put there by the author of its sound and concept.
