W wolnym czasie, nie mając nic innego do roboty, namiętnie oglądał telewizję, a jego ulubionymi programami były: show "I Love Lucy" i serial "Lassie". Życie w Birmingham nie było zbyt ciekawe, rodzice Ozzy'ego cały czas pracowali, aby utrzymywać dom, przez co rodzina spędzała razem niewiele czasu.
W szkole średniej John otrzymał przezwiska "Ozz-brain" i "Ozzy", które powstały przez skrócenia nazwiska. Z niechęcią brał udział w jakichkolwiek przedstawieniach szkolnych i buntował się przeciwko całemu światu. Jednym z jego największych nieprzyjaciół w szkole, był niejaki Tony Lommi, który wraz ze swoimi kolegami wyśmiewał jego wysoki, "babski" głos i prześladował go niemiłosiernie (...).
