"Pasja według św. Mateusza" jest jedną z dwóch pasji Bacha, które zachowały się w całości. Powstała ona w późnym okresie jego twórczości, gdy kompozytor był kantorem w kościele św. Tomasza w Lipsku. Pierwsze wykonanie "Pasji według św. Mateusza" miało miejsce w Wielki Piątek 15 kwietnia 1729 roku. Ten monumentalny, złożony z 24 scen, utwór stawia współczesnych dyrygentów oraz instrumentalistów wobec wielu różnorodnych problemów wykonawczych. Publikacja "Johann Sebastian Bach, St. Matthew Passion, Introduction and Instructions for Study" Helmutha Rilinga jest skierowana szczególnie do dyrygentów. Zawiera ona wiele przydatnych wskazówek (m. in. odnośnie artykulacji, tempa, dynamiki, frazowania) w odniesieniu do każdej ze scen pasji. Zawarty jest w niej także opis pierwszych wykonań tej kompozycji w czasach współczesnych Bachowi. The technical and interpretive analyses of the "Passion According to Saint Matthew" which are found in this volume offer a new, exciting, and thoroughly logical approach to solving the intricate problems presented by Bach's masterpiece. For a modern performance of the St. Matthews Passion, the knowledge of performancew practice in Bach's time must be presupposed. The modern conductor must become familiar with special performance characteristics of the situation in which Bach foud himself at the Thimaskirche in Leipzig from 1723 to 1750.The St. Matthew Passion was written for the Good Friday afternoon service in 1729. Zapis obejmuje dodatkowe sugestie dotyczące wygrywania poszczególnych fragmentów, co znacznie ułatwia zrozumienie zapisu i poprawne odtwarzanie zawartych w książce dzieł. Część utworów przeznaczona jest na flet poprzeczny solo, a część na duet fletów poprzecznych. This collection of flute parts taken from J. S Bach's cantatas and oratorios will provide the flutist with adequate material for study and practical purposes, access to which has hitherto been difficult. The selected material covers four volumes, three intended for transverse flute and one for recorder. In odd cases a note will be found appended to passages the instrumentation of which is subject to dispute. Reconstructions of doubtful sources as well as works erroneously ascribed to J. S. Bach have not been included in the collection. A large number of pieces, above all obbligato aria parts, are reproduced in their unabridged form and distinguished by the sign O. Other passages appear in the nature of excerpts which are suitable for gaining an insight into the musical character of the passage in question, or for use as material to prepare sections likely to present technical difficulty.
