Jacques F. Mazas (ur. w 1782 r., zm. w 1849 r.), skrzypek - wirtuoz i kompozytor, uczeń Baillota w paryskim konserwatorium. Mazas koncertował z wielkim powodzeniem w całej Europie. Oprócz szkoły gry na skrzypcach i szkoły gry na altówce napisał wiele utworów na oba te instrumenty. Niniejsze opracowanie etiud skrzypcowych Mazasa (op. 36) na altówkę zawiera warianty, tj. sposoby ćwiczenia, ułatwiające dokładne ich opanowanie. Powtarzanie trudniejszych etiud, choćby z nieznacznymi zmianami smyczkowymi lub rytmicznymi, staje się mniej monotonne, a przez to mniej nużące. W obrębie poszczególnych taktów wyłaniają się wyraźne fragmenty trudniejsze. Trzeba poświęcić im specjalną uwagę i ćwiczyć je najprostszymi sposobami, a więc osobnymi, wolnymi ćwierćnutami. Przy trudnościach intonacyjnych występujących szczególnie przy zmianach pozycji, należy ćwiczyć w pozycjach łatwiejszych, potem oba sposoby porównywać, a przez wytrwałe powtarzanie błędy usuwać i dojść w końcu do wykonania całkowicie poprawnego.

Publikacja zawiera dwie Etiudy koncertowe Franciszka Liszta: "Waldesrauschen" i "Gnomenreigen". Franciszek Liszt uważany jest za najwybitniejszego kompozytora węgierskiego. Koncertować zaczął jako dwunastolatek i już wówczas uważany był za wybitnie uzdolnionego pianistę. Później wyjechał do Paryża, gdzie pobierał lekcje kompozycji od Ferdynanda Paera, twórcy włoskich oper i Antona Reicha, kompozytora i teoretyka muzyki. Wydanie przygotowane zostało przez Alfreda Cortot'a (1877-1962) który był pianistą i dyrygentem francuskim. Studiował grę na fortepianie w konserwatorium paryskim, działał jako dyrygent w Bayreuth i Paryżu. Wybitny wykonawca, miłośnik i znawca muzyki romantycznej oraz muzyki francuskiej.

In this new edition of Johannes Brahms' Piano Works the results of scholary research into authentic sources of revision have been combined with the experience of international concert practise and established academic principles of interpretation. Serving as a basis for the preparation of this revision was the edition of "Brahms' Complete Works" undertaken in 1926 - 1928 by Eusebius Mandyczewski, archivist of the "Gesekkschaft der Musikfreunde", Vienna.
