Gorczycki jest jednym z najwybitniejszych przedstawicieli polskiego baroku w muzyce. Cztery hymny, które zostały zamieszczone w niniejszej publikacji, nie były nigdy za życia kompozytora drukowane. Wykonywano je z kopii rękopiśmiennych. Utwory reprezentują nurt twórczości, w którym krzyżują się założenia artystyczne i środki palestrinowskiego "stile antico" z nowszymi, charakterystycznymi dla "stile moderno". Teksty, na których oparte są cztery hymny należą do zabytków starochrześcijańskiej poezji liturgicznej, tworzonej według zasad wersyfikacji łacińskiej - metrycznej. Obsada wykonawcza utworów jest dokładnie oznaczona - czterogłosowy zespół wokalny w składzie: sopran, alt, tenor i bas, dwoje skrzypiec oraz organy, których partia zapisana była w postaci basu cyfrowanego. Głosy wokalne występują w zwartej grupie, prawie zawsze z towarzyszeniem instrumentów. Źródłem niniejszego wydania są rękopiśmienne partytury, sporządzone przez A. Chybińskiego z poszczególnych głosów pisanych ręką kompozytora. Ponieważ rękopisy, z których korzystał Chybiński, spłonęły w Bibliotece Narodowej podczas II wojny światowej, komentarz rewizyjny odnosi się wyłącznie do kopii, a nie do oryginałów.

Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki, one of the mostoutstanding representatives of Polish Baroque music, came from Upper Silesia. He was born about 1667. The compositions included in the present edition were never printed in his lifetime, but like the rest of his output, were performed from manuscript copies. They reflect the creative trend in which the artistic guiding principles and media of palestrina's "stile antico" cross with newer ones, characteristic of the "stile moderno". The texts of which the compositions now published are based are examples of early Christian liturgical petry composed according to the principales of Latin metrical versification. The form of the works under discussion in characterized by progression in small sections, which is in turn determined by the structure of the lityrgical text and it is realized mainly by way of the motet method of chorale treatment, so popular in German sacred music of seventeen century. In the hymns the scoring is precisely defined - it consists of a four-part vocal ensemble (soprano, alto, tenor and bass), two violins and an organ, whose part was notated in the form of figured bass. The vocal parts form a compact group, nearly always accompanied by instruments. The sources of present edition are the manuscript scores prepared by A. Chybiński from the individual parts written by the composer. Since the manuscripts used by Chybiński were destroyed by fire in the National Library in Warsaw during the Second World War, the Editorial Notes refer exclusively to the copies, and not to the originals.

"Missa in tempore Belli" w tonacji C-dur jest dziesiątą mszą Josepha Haydna. Msza nazywana bywa także "Paukenmesse" ze względu na włączenie do orkiestry kotłów. Msza powstawała w 1796 roku, podczas gry Austria toczyła przegraną wojnę z Francją pod przywództwem Napoleona Bonaparte. Premiera dzieła miała miejsce 26 grudnia, 1796 w kościele Pijarów w Wiedniu. W prezentowanym wydaniu dzieło opracowane jest na chór SATB z fortepianem (partytura).

Unlike some of Haydn's other works, the title of this mass comes from Haydn himself. He termed it Missa in Tempore Belli, and dated it 1796. At this time Austria was waging a losing war against France as Napoleon, then a young general, continued to win every battle. In August of 1796 the government in Vienna, under the Emperor Franz, proclaimed general mobilization and forbade any discussion of peace until the French were driven from Austria. At this time, Haydn was probably working on the "Agnus Dei". His use of prominent timpani passages suggests distant cannon fire and the trumpet fanfares have a definite military character. The closing section, "Dona Nobis Pacem", is not only a prayer for peace but for victory.

Oratorium "Mesjasz" Händla powstało w 1741 roku.
