System Of A Down powstał w 1995 roku, w Los Angeles. Było to następstwem spotkania wokalisty Serja Tankiana (Serj Adam Tankian, ur. 21 sierpnia 1967 roku w Bejrucie) z młodym gitarzystą Daronem Malakianem (Daron Artie Malakian, ur. 18 lipca 1975 w Glendale), do którego doszło dwa lata wcześniej. Panowie grali wprawdzie w innych zespołach, ale szybko odkryli, że mają podobne zainteresowania i wkrótce zaczęli muzykować razem. Wraz z nimi grupę, która nosiła nazwę Soil, współtworzył wówczas Andranik "Andy" Khatchadurian, który grał na perkusji. Niedługo później do tej trójki dołączył Shavarsh "Shavo" Odadjian (Shavarsh Robert Odadjian, ur. 22 kwietnia 1974 roku, w Erewaniu, w Armenii).
