In 1704 Johann Jakob Bach (1682-1722) one of Sebastian's two surviving elde brothers, accepted a position as oboist in the National Guard of the Swedish King Charles XII.This demanded his settlement in Sweden - then far enough away from Saxony to make his eventual return problematical. His departure from so closely-knit a family doubtless caused much grief, the more so since he appears to have been popular member and especially dear to the nineteen-year-old Sebastian.
