Ten amerykański czarnoskóry muzyk jazzowy, obdarzony ciepłym głosem o pięknej barwie i głębi, rozpoczął karierę jako pianista, później jednak wsławił się balladami. Dzieciństwo i młodość spędził w Chicago. W 1937 roku zaczął występować w klubach jazzowych w Los_Angeles. W 1939 roku założył Trio King Cole (wraz z Oscarem Moorem i Wesleyem Princem). Z czasem jego związki z jazzem uległy rozluźnieniu, a on przeszedł do historii przede wszystkim jako wokalista śpiewający muzykę "łatwą i przyjemną".

The Red Violin Caprices (duration: ca. 10 min.) are derived from John Corigliano's music for The Red Violin, which received the 1999 Academy Award for Best Original Score. The Caprices were composed especially for Joshua Bell. 'These Caprices, composed in conjunction with the score for François Girard's film The Red Violin, take a spacious, troubadour-inspired theme and vary it both linearly and stylistically. These variations intentionally evoke Baroque, Gypsy, and arch-Romantic idioms as they examine the same materials (a dark, seven-chord chaconne as well as that principal theme) from differing aural viewpoints. The Caprices were created and ordered to reflect the structure of the film, in which Bussotti, a fictional 18th-century violin maker, crafts his greatest violin for his soon-to-be-born son. When tragedy claims wife and child, the grief-stricken Bussotti, in a gesture both ardent and macabre, infuses the blood of his beloved into the varnish of the instrument. Their fates thus joined, the violin travels across three centuries through Vienna, London, Shanghai and Montreal, passing through the hands of a doomed child prodigy, a flamboyant virtuoso, a haunted Maoist commissar, and at last a willful Canadian expert, whose own plans for the violin finally complete the circle of parent and child united in art.' - John Corigliano

Bob Marley przyszedł na świat we wsi Nine Maile nieopodal miasta Saint Anns na Jamajce. Jego ojcem był biały oficer armii brytyjskiej (Marley nigdy go nie poznał), a matka jamajską wieśniaczką. Rodzina przeniosła się do stolicy Jamajki - Kingston, gdzie zamieszkali w dzielnicy slumsów - Trenchtown. Marley znalazł pracę jako spawacz i w tym właśnie czasie założył swój pierwszy zespół. W 1962 roku Marley nagrał w studiu swój pierwszy singel "Judge Not". Pierwsze nagrania Marleya, takie jak "Put It On", "Ten Commandments" oraz "Love and Affection", opowiadały o świecie ulic Trenchtown, o zdesperowanych chuliganach i ulicznikach. W tym czasie zaczął krystalizować się skład Weilersów - grupy, która współtworzyła później sławę Marleya. Rastafarianizm to nie tylko religia, ale także specyficzny styl życia (np. marihuana uważana jest tu za święte ziele). Marley zaangażował się w ten ruch. Rastafarianie wierzą, że Afrykanie są narodem wybranym. Marley śpiewał właśnie o idei powrotu Afrykanów z ziemi wygnania i wyzysku - Babilonu (czyli świata Zachodu) do ziemi wolności - Afryki. W połowie lat 60 kształtował się nurt, który dziś określany jest jako reggae - szybka, rytmiczna muzyka z wyrazistym rytmem. The Wailers mieli wielki udział w rozpropagowaniu tej muzyki. W 1968 r. Marley ostatni raz obciął włosy. Potem już zawsze nosił długie dredy, fryzurę typową dla rastafarian.
3 grudnia 1976 r. siedmiu napastników z bronią wpadło do domu artysty w Kingston, raniąc Marleya, jego żonę i menedżera Dona Taylora. Po zamachu Marley przeniósł się na Florydę. W 1977 r. stwierdzono u niego nowotwór i usunięto mu palec u nogi, informując media, że odniósł kontuzję podczas gry w piłkę nożną. Latem 1980 r. nowotwór znów dał znać o sobie, gdy artysta zasłabł podczas joggingu w nowojorskim Central Parku. Ostatni koncert Marleya odbył się 23 września 1980 r. w Pittsburgu. Po koncercie muzyk poddany został badaniom lekarskim, które ujawniły raka płuc i żołądka oraz wielki guz w mózgu. Zmarł 11 maja 1981 roku. Pochowano go na Jamajce.
