Ancient Song

Kolędy (carols) stand for Polish religious songs conneced with Christmas, but it was only in the 17th century when the current meaning of this term was finally established. Kolęda' is the equivalent of English 'carol' ('nowell'), French 'noël' or German 'Weihnachtslied'. The origin of this word goes back to the ancient times. Romans used to regard calenda as the first day of each month; in January it was celebrated in a particularly festive manner because since the calendar reform made by Caesar in 45 B.C., it began a new year.

This Collection of arrangements was written during a particulary interesting season in my family's life. I wrote the first few arrangements while enjoying the springtime of Southern California, our home for the past 22 years. During those decades I married my wife, Lisa. It was in those sunny surroundings that our children Lindsay and Sean came into the world. This summer we moved to Tennesse, and it was here in the lush green beauty of our new hometown that I completed these arrangements.

This eight-movement suite was written by composer Tan Dun when he was a student in 1978-1979, about the time he left his home in Hunan to study at the conservatory in Beijing. He was homesick, and wrote this suite as a diary of his longing, while also being immersed in studying Western classical and modern music. Twenty years after its composition, pianist Lang Lang premiered the suite at the Kennedy Center in 2003, and he also played it at Carnegie Hall, in a performance recorded by Deutsche Grammophon.
