With this book of originals and arangements for piano duet, beginners have the chance to get to grips with ragtime, its sound and its rhythms. It is a difficult to play piano style, the outcome of a form which originated in the American Midwest around 1890.
The carefree happiness and rhythmic vitality of the syncopated ragtime melody make it an interesting and popular teaching recource. Its form is constructed on sixteen - bar periods, each comprising one theme (or "stain"), the number of statements of this theme within each period limited to three or four.
The "beat in the Secondo part should be played evenly, strongly and confidenly but never mechanically or over - emphatically.
It is the blend of just melodic input and rhythmic precision which gives the Rag its particular life and swing.
