Jean Baptiste Lully (28 listopada 1632 - 22 marca 1687) to francuski kompozytor epoki baroku. Jego muzyka znana jest z żywotności, oraz licznych zmian o charakterze emocjonalnym. Wśród dzieł znane są balety i opery. Niniejsza publikacja zawiera Chaconne rozpoczynające operę "Roland" skomponowaną przez Lully'ego w 1685 roku do libretta Philippe Quinault. Prawykonanie dzieła miało miejsce w Wersalu 8 stycznia 1685 roku. Chaconne w obecnym wydaniu opracowane jest na orkiestrę smyczkową (partytura). We wstępie zostały podane uwagi wykonawcze od edytora. This chaconne (or passacaille, as Lully might well have called it) is the opening orchestral section of one of those giant song - and - dance spectacles - divertissements, to be polite about it - which Jean Baptiste Lully (1632 - 1687) liked to include in his tragedies en musique, as the first French operas (those of Lully himself) were called. The present one is from Roland, first performed at Versailles for the court of Louis XIV in 1685 (the year Bach and Handel were born). Although the chaconne continues, with the addition of choral and solo vocal ensembles, for many more measures than the 249 with which the orchestra alone (though surely not without a corps de ballet also in action) introduces the spectacle, the orchestral introduction itself is a shapely, selfsufficient, and substantial piece, with its neat division into three balanced sections - the first (88 measures) in G major, the second (80 measures) in the parallel G minor, and the third (81 measures) back in G major again).
